Exploring Hong Kong with a baby
Traveling with an infant is definitely a challenge. In fact, some might suggest to put off your travels until your child is a couple years older! But don’t let your child get in the way of your travels. Though it’s true that your travel habits will change, bringing your child along for a holiday adds to the adventure and it will surely be a memorable one!
If you’ve been looking to travel to Hong kong with your baby, a lot of preparation needs to be done beforehand. So first-time traveling mommies, we’ve got you covered! Here’s a list of things that might be helpful as you prepare for your baby’s first Hong Kong trip!
1. Ditch the stroller, bring a baby carrier
Hong Kong isn’t exactly a stroller-friendly city. The streets are so busy and narrow that navigating the city on your own is already quite the challenge, what more with a stroller? That said, it’s definitely more convenient to bring a baby carrier or wrap instead. It’s also one less thing to worry about when packing!
However if you don’t think you or your baby can live without a stroller, there are rental areas in Hong Kong that offer stroller services, too!
2. Book your tickets ahead of time
Long waiting times can cause your baby to be impatient and tired, which can totally ruin your day. To avoid this, we advise booking all your tours, tickets, and transportation passes ahead of time! Not only do you get to save time lining up, but you’ll also be able to save on Klook activities and check if certain activities are child friendly!
3. Booking a private car charter for convenient transportation
Again, as much as possible, avoid long waiting periods. With children less than 18 months old, it’s still pretty difficult to predict their hunger pangs, or when they would want to take a nap. These erratic instances can be best dealt with in the comfort of a private van, don’t you think? If you book a private car charter, you and your baby will be able to prepare for the next destination on your list in the most comfortable manner! Additionally, our car charters come with a baby seat – just request upon booking!
If you don’t want to be hassled from the get-go of your holiday, book an airport transfer in advance! You will be immediately transported to your accommodation at ease and with comfortability.
4. Pick up your Octopus Pass at the airport
If you have no problem using public transportation while traveling with your baby, we recommend you book the Octopus Pass beforehand and pick it up at the airport! This pass can be used for public transportation, convenience store purchases, fast food, and more!
Though many tourists do opt to purchase the Octopus card for their holiday, many make the mistake of picking it up at the MTR station. Tourists and locals crowd here to get their passes, so it’s best to pick them up as soon as you land!
5. Pre-book your WiFi and stay constantly connected
Staying connected is so incredibly vital these days. In fact, it’s become nearly impossible to roam around without a phone or WiFi. That said, traveling to Hong Kong is no exception – especially if you’re bringing along your infant. There are some instances that even pre-planning cannot foresee, so it’ll be inevitable to need the help of WiFi from time to time.
Some of the instances include finding the nearest restroom to finding the nearest restaurant with changing rooms. To navigate these seamlessly, book a 4G Pocket WiFi before jetting off to Hong Kong!
6. Bring your own cutlery
Apart from irregular hunger pangs, babies can be pretty picky when it comes to meals and finding the right kind of food in a foreign country can prove challenging.. So pack some baby food to go and have those baby cutleries on hand too!
7. Traveling to Macau? Stay the night
Many first time tourists traveling to Hong Kong would usually plan a day trip to Macau due to its close proximity. If you plan to do the same, we suggest staying the night instead. There are a number of fun things to do in Macau with your kids, so you can definitely expect that they could get grumpy and tired halfway through. So instead of enduring this, end the night early and proceed with a couple more sightseeing after your baby has had a good night’s sleep.
8. Diapers and Nursing Covers are good to have on hand
Unless your scope of travel doesn’t go beyond Hong Kong’s high-end malls, then you won’t have any trouble finding comfort rooms with changing areas and lactation rooms. But if you plan to check out Hong Kong’s best attractions, then you will need to bring velcro diapers and nursing covers.
It can be hard locating a toilet in metropolitan Hong Kong, much less changing areas and lactation rooms. That said, it would be a lot more convenient to bring easy velcro diapers for you baby to change into and as well as nursing covers for breastfeeding in public!
9. Baby – friendly Attractions in Hong Kong
The city of Hong Kong is predominantly child friendly! But in case you want a shortlist of specific places to enjoy with your kid, we’ve got you covered! If your child is not more than 2 years old, he/she can enter for free in these attractions! However, these policies may be different per destination, so it’s always good to check beforehand!
